Start career
With my background in (aviation) logistics, it was a 'logical' step to work at a company where logistics was widely available. In a combination role with a lot of project management, I was able to gain a lot of experience, get to know people and, above all, apply my knowledge from the training. In 5 years I have learned a lot, which shows that regardless of your study background, there are opportunities and that learning never stops.
The next career step
The route to a job that suits you is different for everyone. You may know it right after graduation, or you may need to find out more first. A role as a consultant came my way. I already had some ERP knowledge/experience, so I knew what it would entail. But even without it, I could have read up on this.
During the search, I wanted to take into account several criteria. Firstly, sufficient challenge, a pleasant / informal working atmosphere, enough to learn in the long term, a company with growth potential, independence and of course a match in terms of (substantive) work.
Become a consultant at Odoo Experts
After a period of research, I came across Odoo Experts. One of the largest/best-known Odoo partners in the Netherlands. In addition, Odoo is an increasingly important player in the field of ERP software. It also appears that companies have an increasing need for user-friendly and modern ERP software and are in need to be supported by a consultant. Summarizing; I could judge this as growth and potential!
I was able to get acquainted informally over a digital cup of coffee – in corona times. A non-binding conversation for both sides to taste whether a match is possible. With a positive response from both sides, things can move quickly; a follow-up meeting was held shortly after and soon we were able to talk about an agreement. A complete package with decent conditions, where mobility is also well arranged, whether you are working at the office, at home or at the customer. Time for the next career step!
First day at work and more
After leaving my job, I had a short vacation to recharge. Then I started at Odoo Experts on March 1, 2021. The first three months are mainly devoted to getting to know the Odoo software, watching an implementation project, research/improvement plans (according to interest) and developing as a consultant (think of soft skills). Odoo also has a platform where you can learn a lot about various topics of the ERP package through video material. You can then carry out extensive testing within your own Odoo demo environment. You get the space to take it all in.
After this period, you will take more and more. You may focus on the topics that suit you best. Or just the parts you think of; here I can grow. Personally, I wanted some more basic knowledge about accounting (of course many things have a financial consequence), so I was allowed to follow a course in calculation and accounting. This may not be the most exciting subject for everyone, but it gives a nice idea to strengthen it!
Set goals
You set goals together. For example; “After 6 months, I want to be an expert in stock and webshop design”. Then “I would like to call myself an expert in the field of e-mail marketing within 3 months”, etc. In addition to the regular basis, there is room to focus, thus opting for an expertise that you can expand more and more. An ERP system has many aspects, the possibilities are therefore great. But by means of focus, you don't make it too big.
There is an increasing demand for Odoo software in the Netherlands and abroad. To experience the growth of Odoo Experts as a partner of Odoo in this is a great experience. I think this can also be a great opportunity for others who are unsure about a career switch as a consultant.
